Mazda 6 is launched at 2012 Moscow motor show

By Ben Whitworth

Mazda has unveiled its new 6 saloon at the 2012 Moscow motor show – a nod to the significance of the Eastern European markets for the Japanese car maker. This third-generation Mazda 6 will be the second model in Mazda’s line-up to feature both its suite of innovative SkyActiv drivetrain and chassis technologies and the company’s ‘Kodo – Soul of Motion’ design language.

That’s a clunky design title, but the new 6 is anything but - it’s a handsome looking car in our eyes, and takes its riffs from the Mazda Takeri concept first seen at the 2011 Tokyo motor show. Its sleek and coherent design – check out that neat nose, rakish profile and chunky 19-inch alloys – that makes many of its rivals look flabby and bland. And with a claimed class-leading drag coefficient of Cd 0.26, it’s aerodynamically efficient, too.

Interestingly, Mazda has dropped the popular hatch from the line-up, claiming the saloon is sleek enough and versatile enough with its 40:60 split rear seat to replace it, a move that could cause a spot of bother for company car drivers in the hatch-loving UK market.

The 6 rides on the company’s versatile SkyActiv architecture, with a MacPherson strut front and rear multi-link rear suspension layout and economy-enhancing electrically assisted steering. Greater use of high-tensile steels has bolstered torsional rigidity and lowered weight. The petrol-powered 2.0-litre manual saloon weighs in at 1,340kg which compares well to the 1,435kg posted by the outgoing equivalent engined hatchback.

Despite this weight loss, the 6 is slightly bigger. Its wheelbase has grown by 105mm to 2,830mm – the saloon is now 4,800mm long saloon, compared to the outgoing hatch’s 4,755mm – and the front axle has been pushed forward 100mm ahead of the A-pillar to both reduce the front overhang and boost accommodation space front and rear.

Mazda promises that the tactility of the driver-touch materials and overall quality of the cabin design will be a dramatic step forward compared to the current car. NVH levels – a bugbear of the current range – have also been tackled. Safety features include Rear Vehicle Monitoring, Smart City Brake Support and Adaptive Front Lighting with High-Beam Control.

As well as the now-familiar SkyActiv suite of economy-enhancing technologies, the new 6 ushers in its regenerative braking system - i-ELOOP. The system captures what would be lost kinetic energy when the driver lifts off the throttle and charges a high-capacity double-layer capacitor via a 12-25Volt variable voltage alternator.

The capacitor, housed ahead of the front left wheel, then uses the stored energy to power other electrical systems – climate control, headlamps, infotainment – lessening the overall burden on the engine. A DC/DC converter steps down the electricity from 25V to 12V so it can be used for the vehicle's electrical components. Mazda engineers talk of a 10% boost in economy as a result, but the i-ELOOP will not be standard on all UK models.

While the 6 was unveiled in Russia with 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre Skyactive-G petrol engines, the latter aimed squarely at the Russian market, it will be the Skyactive-D turbo diesel engine that will be have the bigger appeal in the UK and Europe. Borrowed from the CX-5 crossover, the smooth and muscular 2.0-litre units has outputs of 148bhp or 173bhp, and will be available with six-speed Skyactiv-MT manual or Skyactiv-Drive automatic transmissions.

The estate version is scheduled for a Paris Motor Show debut later this year, with both saloon and estate arriving in the UK before Christmas. There’s no word on pricing yet, but our insiders claim Mazda UK is working hard against the strength of the Yen for a £20,000 kick-off price. Full 12 month sales for both estate and saloon are expected around the 8,000 mark, with petrol sales expected to be relatively strong against those of the diesel, due to its low CO2 levels.

Alfa Romeo Spider and Mazda MX-5 (2015): the new sports cars revealed

By Tim Pollard (artist's impressions by Christian Schulte)

10 August 2012 12:33

The Fiat Group's revelation in May 2012 that it would co-develop the next Alfa Romeo Spider alongside the Mazda MX-5 got everyone at CAR, and its digital audience, salivating. Today we can bring you the latest artist's impressions showing how this Japanese-Italian fusion could look on the road.

This is perhaps one of the most exciting prospects for years: a project marrying Italian design flair and Alfa Romeo style with the Japanese reliability and back-to-basics MX-5 purity. It could be a marriage made in heaven – we'll know for sure when we see this duo in 2015.

These are artist's impressions, remember. None of us yet know exactly how the sports car twins will look, but the rules of jigsaw identification mean we can have a good stab at how they'll turn out.

The MX-5 hasn't deviated much over the years from the original 1989 recipe, and our sources at Mazda suggest the same evolutionary style will continue, pepped up with the latest 'Kodo' design language seen on the new 6 family car. That means a pointier front face and exaggerated Mazda grille, but the essential footprint of the 2015 MX-5 won't change much.

This suggests the Alfa Spider won't be wildly different. The hard points of the architecture will be shared, but each brand will be allowed the freedom to graft on their own grilles and corporate jewellery. Let's hope they're allowed more flexibility than the identikit Toyota GT86 and Subaru BRZ twins.

While details remain scant on the Spider/MX-5 project, a few nuggets have been announced already in the formal statement.

'The study calls for both Mazda and Fiat to develop two differentiated, distinctly styled, iconic and brand-specific light weight, roadsters featuring rear-wheel drive,' the companies have confirmed. 'The Mazda and Alfa Romeo variants will each be powered by specific proprietary engines unique to each brand.

'The project assumption is that both vehicles will be manufactured at Mazda’s Hiroshima, Japan, plant with production for Alfa Romeo envisaged starting in 2015.'

Each brand will stick with their own engines, and CAR understands the Spider will use the 1750TBi four-cylinder, tuned to produce more than 200bhp and mated to a seven-speed twin-clutch TCT transmission.

CAR understands the Italian roadster will stick with a folding soft-top, rather than use the MX-5's folding hard top. Fingers crossed the rear-wheel drive purity of the Mazda comes as standard on the Alfa Romeo Spider.

Mazda 6 (2012) revealed in teaser images

By Ollie Kew

First Official Pictures

25 July 2012 11:01

Mazda has released shadowy teaser images of its new 6 saloon, in anticipation of its world premiere at the Moscow motor show, running from 29 August - 9 September 2012.

The car's nose is very similar to the Takeri concept of 2011, continuing the new Mazda family face first seen in production trim on the new Mazda CX-5 crossover.

Like the CX-5, the new Mazda 6 will benefit from Mazda's 'SkyActiv' technology. SkyActiv brings a lightweight modular architecture and a range of cleaner petrol and diesel engines – which Mazda claims are nearly as frugal as hybrids without a bulky EV battery in sight. The Takeri’s 2.2 turbodiesel spat out 173bhp and 310lb ft, yet Mazda claimed just 104g/km of CO2.
Such cleanliness should be achievable on the new 6 in road trim, since it’ll sport SkyActiv staples such as stop/start, low-friction components and regenerative braking.

Dubbed i-ELOOP, this braking system harnesses energy when you dab the brakes and stores it in a capacitor to run the car’s electric systems. This saves battery drain and is claimed to stretch combined fuel economy by up to 10%.

Two bodystyles will again be offered – a four-door saloon or an estate/tourer – and we’d predict prices to kick off at around £20,000 for the base models. Mazda needs to keep prices and emissions low to continue the 6's strong fleet sales record.
Why no hatchback? Because Mazda polled the product ranges from premium car makers and saw that five-doors are deemed more mainstream, and who wants to be mainstream when you can aim for 'premium'? So four-door it is for the new 6, albeit with a coupe-like rakishness.

Tellingly, the worldwide reveal is taking place at the Moscow motor show. Alongside China, Russia is growing fast as a new car market consumer, and with the crisis in Europe ongoing, manufacturers are keen to capitalise on this greater demand in new markets.

Mazda MX-5 (2012) facelift pictures

By Ollie Kew

First Official Pictures

11 July 2012 13:03

Updated 2012 Mazda MX-5s have begun rolling off the company's production line in Hiroshima, Japan. The updates improve brake and throttle reponse, pedestrian safety, and give the MX-5 a slightly wider-mouthed look.

The more aggressive front grille design is more aerodynamically efficient, according to Mazda. The only other cosmetic changes are a new shade of metallic grey paint, and updated steering wheel spoke design.

Thankfully, the changes under the skin are less subtle and should improve on the MX-5's driver-satisfaction scale.

Just enough to make the back-to-basics roadster more tactile, reckons Mazda. This has been acheived through modifying the throttle pedal response on manual transmission models.

It's said to make acceleration feel more linear, with improvements particularly noticeable when accelerating from low speed.

Thankfully the brakes should be up to the job of hauling you to a halt if the MX-5's improved throttle spurs you on too much. The characteristics of the vacuum brake-booster have been revised to optimise brake return control.

Jargon, yes, but essentially the brakes should be more confidence-inspiring and that bit easier to modulate. We'll find out for sure when we drive the new 2012 MX-5 soon.

A pop-up bonnet is now standard, increasing the crush room for the unfortunate victim should the car hit a pedestrian. The front bumper is also kinder to hapless jaywalkers' legs, too.

Sales of the updated MX-5 start later in 2012 in the UK, though there's no confirmation from Mazda as to whether the world's favourite roadster will incur a price increase to boot.

Mazda to double SKYACTIV engine production starting in October

SKYACTIV cutaway

In brief: Mazda is planning to double SKYACTIV engine production to 800,000 in October as they add more efficiency to their model lines.

Mazda plans to increase fuel efficiency of its model fleet by 30% by 2015, globally. In the United States, the Mazda3 and 2013 CX-5 offer SKYACTIV technology and in 2014 the Mazda6 will also offer it.

Mazda says that when they meet their goal in 2015, the 30% better efficiency will translate to a 23% fuel consumption drop and the emissions cutting that goes with that.

In June of this year, more than 55% of Mazda's North American sales were in SKYACTIV vehicles and that number will only continue to grow as more and more are added to the lineup.

SKYACTIV is a rethink of the entire vehicle, starting with its framing, suspension/chassis, and drive train. SKYACTIV engines in both gasoline and diesel are integral to those improvements.
